Boys 18s Doubles Finalists L-R A. Kalhorn & T. Frost

The ITA Great Pumpkin is played by many people all across the Intermountain six state region. A total of 132 juniors from Las Vegas played in this tournament. The children of Las Vegas did quite well in the well-known tournament.
The winner of the boys 18s singles division was Ashton Kalhorn, the fourth seed, who is currently residing in the city of Vegas and is coached by David Pate. Ashton also trains at the No Quit Home School Academy at Lorenzi Park.
Also doing well in this division was Jeffery Vongman of Team Agassi , making it to the quarterfinals, and Patrick Kawka of the No Quit Academy, winning the consolation. Kawka also won the boys 18s doubles division with Devin Lane, playing Ashton Kalhorn and Tyler Frost in the finals. Kawka will be playing for BYU next year on a scholarship.
Also representing Las Vegas in the doubles division were Jeffery Vongman with Kristofer Yee , and Dillon McNamara with Club Sports Devon Morrissey.

This year, Faith Lutheran played their second year of 4A tennis. The girls team finished the season out 7-3 and the boys team finished 6-4. Overall they did a great job for it only being their second year ever playing the 4A sport.
The girls went undefeated against Virgin Valley, winning 18-0. They also beat Centennial in a close match of 10-8, with Nikki Pizzoferrato and Olivia Demarta going 3-0 for that day. The girls team also defeated Cimarron 12-6, with Alex Edelman, Renee Vogel, Olivia Demarta, Nikki Pizzoferrato, and Aubrey Astle going 3-0 for that day as well. The Faith Lutheran girls team did very well this year and have a lot to be proud of. Although they just missed the cut to go to regionals, they fought hard and will be back next year to show everyone what they are capable of doing.
The boys team went 15-3 against Shadow Ridge with Jake Benowitz going 3-0. They also beat Cheyenne 14-4, Mojave 10-2, and Virgin Valley 14-4. The boys fought hard against Arbor View and won 10-8. Tom Trowbridge, Sam Taylor, Kyle Harper, and Jake Benowitz all went 2-1 for this match. All of the boys on the team fought hard and played their best. The boys didn’t make it to regionals as well, however they will come back next year and fight to do better.

With Andre Agassi's new Biography ready to hit books shelves Monday November 9th many are speculating as to why the tennis great was so honest with his life story. Some have even gone so far as to criticize his decision to be so "Open."
Andre Agassi faces adversity, stares it in the eye and triumphs; That has been the pattern of his life. His example has loomed as the classic hero, filled with challenges and foes only to slay the dragon time and time again. He overcame poverty, the rigors of training, tough losses, divorce and now he reveals in 1997 at the low point of his life he beat back the demons of drug use. This, right before the story book reversal of fortune that ended with grand slam titles, a ground breaking charitable foundation, and most importantly a happy life with wife Stephanie Graff and their two children in Las Vegas.

Darling Tennis Center hosted the 2009 National Open Championships presented by Snell and Wilmer. The sleepless Vegas weekend included the National Team Championships(Open-Level), the Snell & Wilmer Tennis Challenge and a blow-out Disco that doubled as the players' party. The National Championships and the Tennis Challenge benefited the American
Cancer Society and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Many of the guests also attended Agassi's Grand Slam For Children which raised close to 8 million to benefit at-risk children through education.
This year, over 400 Open-Level players competed on nearly 40 men's and women's squads for the national team title. In a unique twist on registration, the Championships' sponsor eliminated the tournament entry fee. Instead, each team made a donation to the Cancer Societies in order to participate in the event.

"Tony Bennett is not only a tremendous entertainer but has used his talents to reach out and help so many people," explained his close friend and foundation co-founder Marty Hennessy. "He has helped take our foundation to a whole new level."
Produced by Clint Holmes the Entertainment included Rita Rudner, Clint Holmes, Mosaic (MTV band of the year), Primrose Martin , Cayleigh Capaldi, Ellie Smith (lead in Annie and Secret Garden) and former Sinatra pianist Vinnie Falcone with the Chairman of the Board himself, Tony Bennett.

Wolfington2009 -Mita-Gillin-O'Neill East Coast Leadership Tour, sponsored by Marriott, takes 10 children to 8 cities, 6 Universities, historical sites, countless country clubs to play tennis and be inspired by daily Leadership Breakfast talks with CEO's, Senators, Professional Athletes and more. Some of the speakers included in photos above are Ann Curry of NBC, Executive Producer Jim Bell, Senator John Ensign, Sports Marketing magnet Donald Dell, ATP Pro player Sam Querry and many more. LAS VEGAS , Nevada - June 28, 2009 - The new LAVO Italian Restaurant and Nightclub at the Palazzo Casino and Resort hoested the United States Tennis Association Nevada District's first Annual Adult Awards Banquet this past June 30th. All USTA members recieved free entry into the nightclub, free food and drinks and all captains and pros that attended received a $100.00 gift card.
Thanks to an agreement with USTA-Nevada LAVO is now the official Restaurant, Lounge and nightclub of USTA-Nevada.
"LAVO has been an incredible partner for USTA-Nevada in our quest to thank and support adult tennis players, captains and pros," said USTA-Nevada Executive Director Ryan Wolfington. "It is an honor to be associated with such a prestigious organization."

The USTA Intermountain Junior Team Tennis Sectional Championships were recently held August 14-16 at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colorado. Teams representing all six of the Intermountain States competed in the event, including two teams from Southern Nevada: the 14 & Under Intermediate Team from the Summerlin Tennis Club, and the 18 & Under Intermediate Team from the Andre Agassi Boys & Girls Club.

American Asia Muhammad lived up to the hype at this years US OPEN by winning a round in qualifying draw and in the junior grandslam she beat the #1 junior in the world Kristina Mladenovic of France.Kristina is also the 2009 French Open girls champion and a finalist at Wimbledon. Muhammad who was up 6-1, 4-1 ended up fighting off a last minute surge by Mladenovic closing it out 6-1, 6-4.
Mladenovic, was a semifinalist in the U.S. Open juniors last year and runner-up at Wimbledon juniors this year, proving she is very comfortable on the world’s biggest tennis stages. With one of the best serves in the girls juniors, Mladenovic can take the initiative from the first point, but Muhammad who has been playing professionally all year has proven she can perform on the big stage as well.

We, who love the game of tennis, know that it is a lifetime sport and that we can still enjoy it in our teens all the way through life. Jim Roulias, Henderson, Nevada, has played tennis for 51 years and enjoyed every minute. Jim started playing tennis when he was twelve, fairly late for a junior. He played collegiate tennis at UNR for four years, 1964- 1968, in the old Far West Conference, Division II. He once competed against the legendary Art Larsen, when he played at California State Hayward, in 1967.
Jim says that Art Larsen was way past his prime and had suffered a serious motorcycle accident, previous to his days at Cal State Hayward, but Jim says "it was just a pleasure to be on the same court with such a legend". Jim also coached and travelled to tournaments with promising junior players from Reno into northern California, where he first met well known and beloved Las Vegas pro, Marty Hennesy, when Marty was a junior player in Northern California. Jim says that "Marty was as nice as a junior player as he is today, which isn't always the case". Jim has played USTA League tennis since its inception, having been a 4.5 level player in Reno, Cleveland (where he captained a 4.5 sectional men's team), and in Las Vegas, where his rating changed to a 4.0 when he was 55 years old. Jim says that "4.0 is a great competitive level, because you have so many levels and types of players within the 4.0 rating".
