Mylan WTT Championships kicks off in Las Vegas
By Andre Walls

Co-hosted by Nevada Tennis Association and 12 time grand slam singles champion Billie Jean King, the Green Dot Ball National Championships took place at the UNLV tennis courts last month.

In a fight for equal opportunity for women, King has made it a point for men and women to be equal not only in sports, but in life. Whether it’s the same amount of prize money among both singles champions at Wimbledon or young boys and girls being able to play on the same court as each other, King strives to make tennis more exciting and fair for the upcoming generation.

In her opening speech before action began, Delaine Mast, National Program Director for World Team Tennis (WTT), asked the junior players how many had not played mixed doubles before. The majority of kids raised their hands. ?Boys and girls don’t learn to play together like they used to,? Mast said. ?It’s about what’s the right thing to do for kids, to get along and getting them to be part of a team [and] getting them to cheer each other on.?

USTA Announces Teams For 2012 ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships

United States Tennis Association (USTA) today announced the players who will represent the United States at the 32nd International Tennis Federation (ITF) Super-Seniors World Team Championships hosted by the Hrvatski Teniski Savez (Croatian Tennis Association) on September 10-15 in Umag, Croatia. The tournament is the senior tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup, with the top American tennis players representing their country in the 60, 65, 70, 75 and 80 and older age groups. The ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships is the most prestigious team event on the ITF Seniors circuit.

Las Vegas local player, Herman Ahlers, will be part of the Bitsy Grant Cup Team in the Men's 75 & over division. Click here for a complete list of the players representing the United States at the 2012 ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships

The Americans will enter the event as the defending champions in nine divisions: defending four Cups in the men’s divisions, including the Von Cramm Cup, Britannia, Bitsy Grant Cup and Gardnar Mulloy Cup; and three in the women’s division, including the Alice Marble Cup, Althea Gibson Cup and Queens’ Cup.

Since the inception of the ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships in 1981, the number of competitors taking part in the tournament has increased each year. In 1993, the ITF made the decision to divide the Seniors World Championships into two groups ? Seniors (35-55) and Super-Seniors (60-80).

The ITF Super-Seniors World Team Championships, the World Individual Championships will take place September 16-23.

Twenty of southern Nevada’s top 13 & under juniors traveled to Claremont, California over the weekend of June 29th & 30th to compete in the Southern California Competition Training Center Team Cup.

This year’s competitors included teams from San Diego, San Gabriel, Santa Barbara/Ventura County, North LA/San Fernando, LA/South Bay, Orange County and Las Vegas.
