USTA $50,000 Women's Pro Circuit Tournament
Red Rock Country Club, Las Vegas, Nev.

Daily blog by By Ryan Wolfington

Lexus of Las Vegas Open was on fire today with a packed house watching Asia Muhammad in her third round singles match. Asia once again pleased the crowd by refusing to lose, fighting back from 4-2 down in the first set to winning the nail biter 7-6. Asia then won the second set swiftly 6-0 against fellow American Lauren Albanese on Stadium Court.

Muhammad then teamed with Coco Vandeweghe to defeat fellow Americans Lauren Albanese and Madison Brengle. Muhammad will play again tomorrow in the quarterfinals (Friday) against the #3 seed at 4pm for the featured match of the day. Asia will also continue her dance in the doubles draw on Saturday.

When asked aout her injured ankle Asia said "I am feeling very good right now. It is a little sensati9ve but I don't let it bother me."

Out there to watch the hometown hero included her father Ron Holmes, her two brothers, Sponsor Phil Aurbach, former Davis Cup player Harry Fritz, her coach and USTA-Nevada President Tim Blenkiron, Hall of Famer Anne Rockwell, USTA-Nevada board members Claire Roth and John Janotta, USTA-Intermountain Executive Director Terry Walters, and many others.

Seeing the seats full at Asia's day match shows the tremendous support this community has for Asia and this pro event, and that is great to see.

Also making heads turn was former Australian Open Grand Slam Champion Mirjana Lucic who earned a hard-fought 3 set victory over one of China's best, Meng Yuan. The 3 set match lasted hours and ended 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. This is another page in a story book comeback for this young girl who just a few years ago was top 40 in the world. She came through the qualification draw on her quest to get back to her top 50 status as a WTA touring pro.

Quarterfinals Friday, Semi-finals Saturday and finals Sunday are the last 3 days for all USTA tennis players to go out and enjoy, support and take in professional tennis against the backdrop of the Red Rock mountains. Tickets are on sale from $10 to $20.00.
